At eighteen, Carl Williams kept writing down one question over and over: "Can I really become a fashion designer?". He turned that "Can I" into the name Karl Kani and founded one of the first hip-hop fashion brands. Fourteen pieces have just landed with us. We shot them straight away on the streets, so we'll show them to you by outfit, the way they belong together.
The whole drop on video
Burgundy corduroy head to toe
Burgundy corduroy looks warm just from a glance. When it's drizzling outside and you don't want to get out of bed in the morning, this is the piece you wrap yourself in and instantly feel better. The jacket, cut like an American college jacket, carries Kani Jeans embroidered across the whole back and takes you back to the nineties, when corduroy was worn head to toe. With pants in the same color you get a full set that makes you feel dressed, not just bundled up for winter. On its own, the jacket goes with jeans every day.
Black tracksuit with a pink stripe
In the nineties, a tracksuit with a side stripe was the uniform for everything: the court, the club and Sunday lunch at grandma's. Black with a pink stripe takes it a step further, it stands out and you can still wear it every day. The pants are wide and fall all the way onto your shoes, and there's a small embroidered Kani on the chest of the jacket. Tracksuit comfort, photo-shoot look.
Light jeans and what goes with them
Light distressed jeans, a loose knit sweater and a faux leather jacket over it. This outfit recalls mid-nineties hip-hop videos and still works today. The sweater with Karl Kani knitted in the same color comes in cream and black, so you choose whether you want to look soft or dark. The jacket has a lining printed with photos inside, a detail only you know about until you unzip it.
Check and navy sweatpants
The blue check on the jacket stands out from a distance and still looks elegant, a bit like the old sports jackets people wore to the stadium. The side stripe keeps its sporty cut. Navy sweatpants with straight legs calm the whole look down, so you get tracksuit comfort and look ready for the city.
Three more pieces to finish
The sweatshirt with 1989 Est. Brooklyn carries the year and the place where it all began, and cream inserts on the sleeves give it a sporty touch. The grey corduroy jacket is the calmer sister of the burgundy one, with the same Kani Jeans on the back. And the black plush hoodie is for evenings when you want your clothes to give you a hug.
We mostly have two pieces of each size. Once everyone wakes up in January wanting a new jacket or hoodie, it will most likely be empty here. Pick yours now, while there's still a choice.
