James Jannard rozjel svou značku Oakley prodejem podomácky vyráběných gripů na řídítka motocrossových motorek a BMX. Ty vyráběl ve své garáži a investoval do nich pouhých 300 dolarů.
Z kufru auta, je prodával jezdcům na motocrossových závodech společně s jeho praktickými a odolnými chrániči. Největší úspěch měli ale právě samotné gripy, na jejichž výrobu používal svou vlastní směsici materiálů, kterou nazval Unobtainium (v překladu „tajná přísada, jenž materiál činí unikátním“). Tímto protikluzovým, gumovým matrošem, je dnes potažena i většina nožiček Oakley brýlí.
Od něj později Oakley odkoupil jeden z nejbohatších lidí na světě, Leonardo Del Vecchio, jenž vede firmu Luxottica, pod kterou vlastní i legendární Ray-Bany.
